Book II: Frustrations
Prologue
Date: September 19th, 1941
Place: New York City Dockyard
The past few months were frustrating for many people in the Big Apple. Captain Desmo looked at his altimeter. He was flying his new customized amphibian plane to escort the latest ship laden with America goods to help the British fight the Germans. He loved flying over above anything he had ever done and found it strange that he was frustrated that he had to resort to escorting the ship because he was stymied in figuring out how the Germans were discovering which ship was headed for England. Primarily because the British theory that their Diplomat Lord Chatley was a German spy was proven false after six weeks of work.
He was also upset that he and his nephew Charles had had a disagreement on the deaths of nine members of the League of Assassins two months ago. Charles was a doctor and a new costumed mystery man who believed there was almost always another way to take down a felon other then killing them. Captain Desmo believed taking his foes out for good was a better method. He and Charles were not still on speaking terms and Captain Desmo was at loss on how to get things back the way they were.
Captain Desmo's partner, Gabby McGuire was felling stymied as well. Not only because of their fruitless work on finding the spies, but also because his search for his son or the other boys Patrick escaped the orphanage had been found. Gabby started working on the docks two weeks ago as a longshoreman. Tough honest work where an observant man might get a lead on the German spy ring. He also took to living a nearby apartment.
Captain Desmo shared the apartment as he was walking the streets of New York without his famous helmet. He was using to cover identity as a small time hustler and chiseler. His dark glasses gave him a shifty look which he used with great affect. He was going by the name Sean Riley, an Irish thief and former member of the Irish Republican Army with a deep hatred of all things British. Gabby's mother had given Captain Desmo a long, long litany of grievances against the British.
The Flying Fox was upset because he had to leave tomorrow fro Hollywood. He had been staying at the Ritz Hotel pretending to be Captain Desmo. The only part of it he didn't like was his having to wear the captain's dirty old aviator's helmet. Still it allowed him to live in his now accustomed luxury, this time on the English dime instead of his own. Best of all for Rex Darrell was the fact the Legion of Assassins had tried to kill him three times with Rex killing one of them each time. His chest still barked at his during and after each attempted assassination, but it hurt less each time. Sadly for him he had pressing over on the west Coast. Desmo thanked Rex over the phone this morning when they said goodbye.
Charles McNider was stymied in his attempt to find the two members League of Assassins who were still alive. They had made three more attempts on his uncle's life and he had failed to stop them, and he wasn't able to stop his Uncle Charles from killing them. He had worked other cases during this time and even joined the Esteem Justice Society of America but this case he just wasn't able to solve because the two remain assassins disappeared into the streets of New York.
Ali Bosma and his sole remain member of his cell of the League of Assassins was even more frustrated as his foes. He and Ming were the only ones still alive. Worse he had discovered they had attacked a decoy the last three time they tried to kill the accursed Desmo. Whoever the pig was who had killed three of his friends was taller and broader that Desmo. It was a horrible setback as they now had no idea where their target was.
Father Murphy had been officially forced into retirement after he confronted the bishop about Minoza because the the police had arrested the priest and worse because the Ledger reported the story on its front page. The Story was still making headlines and the bishop was under scrutiny as as to why he allowed a man to be head of an orphanage when the Church knew was a child molester. Murphy was embittered at his superior, but found a measure of solace when the court appointed him the guardian Walter Johnson and several other of Minoza's victims. He was an old man but these youths gave him energy and he thanked God for them.
Everyone else involved in the “Ritz Massacre” as the Newspapers called it had left New York as soon as the inquest was completed. The Three Aces left for and airplane race in Cleveland Ohio. The members of the Wayne Family headed back to Gotham City. But Batman and Robin returned almost every other week as the Batman kept close tabs on a certain Ritz Hotel bellhop. Though Robin had not been seen in New York since the start of school. Batman knew the man and the one he was with on the street that night were up to no good. He just didn't what it was but he intended to find out.
Otto Marks, the head of the German spies in New York City was also frustrated. New York had a large share of mystery men including three members of the Justice Society. He was under orders to avoid contact with America's mystery men. This greatly curtailed his operations. The there was the Batman returning to the city over and over again to watch one of his operatives, Karl Schmidt, who was a bellhop at the Ritz Hotel and thus gained much information about the various diplomats and businessmen who frequented the establishment. Batman had force Karl to curtail his activities.
Otto's other problem was Captain Desmo, the adventurer had come much closer to proving was of his assets was a spy than he knew. Nevertheless the damn pilot was escorting with his damned plane the ships he was under orders to sink. He had even sunk two u boats. Captain Desmo wasn't a mystery man but Otto's agents swore he hadn't left the hotel in weeks. Yet somehow he was flying his plane, sinking vital u boats, and actively looking for Otto's spy ring. The question was “How?” Otto said in angered frustration.
