Okay, according to Wikipedia, Val Armorr was the son of Kirau Nezumi (Black Dragon), a Japanese crime lord, and Valentina Armorr, a US secret agent (presumably working in anti-crime espionage) in Japan. Nezumi killed his mother but was in his turn by Sensei Toshiaki (White Crane), who adopted him and raised him as his son. Val was a qualified samurai from a young age. His birthplace is designated as Japan, where he worked for a local shogun before joining the Legion of Super Heroes. So, while he is half-Asian, clearly he still values his Japanese cultural heritage and it played an important part in his origin and early life.

See the image about halfway down the page.
When Karate Kid was introduced, he didn't look Asian in any way; he even had curly, almost red hair.
Years later, his appearance conspicuously changed to match his origin story.
Regarding sexism, Saturn Girl aside, look how Lightning Lad and Sun Boy treated women, including a lot of Legion applicants who they publicly humiliated because of their looks.
