I am looking for opinions. Currently at work on a novel (hopefully, the first in a series) and am questioning the length of my chapters. As of now, I have 27 chapters and a total of about 33300 words. On average, the chapters are running about 1000 to 1500 words. I am curious as to whether readers prefer longer or shorter chapters. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Speaking only for myself, I prefer to read chapters at an average of 1500 words or so, to a max of 3000.

I have never paid much attention to word count. (Well, even less than not much, actually...) I don't like a lot of really short chapters, but a really short chapter occasionally is a nice change of pace, especially when there is some significant 'reveal'. Given a representative sample of your work over the past 20 years or so, I think your average chapter length is generally a pretty good match to my attention span, based on the content and pacing of what you generally include in a chapter.

I never payed attention to chapter length either. I think 2-3 pages is normal.
