It's possible that, if she felt unwelcome on Mars Island (which I can imagine) she would choose to leave and be a superhero in the outside world. Africa has a lot of trouble, and few native heroes. Plus, Nubia would blend in easier in that part of the world. It would explain her lack of appearances during that time, since she was operating in an area where she would encounter few American heroes.

That's a good point. Dr. Mist certainly was aware of her if we consider how much he traditionally is depicted as knowing.

Quick edit, John... The room was a cave that had been repurposed as a bunker, with walls of monitors, consuls, consoles and machines. It appeared that collapsing the shield had caused some kind of massive feedback. One entire wall of consuls had exploded.
