Aethyr was briefly merged with Mxykptlk, too. Who knows what effect that could have had on his sanity?!

Yes, well, that may not have been a permanent state of affairs, or even survived into permanent continuity. I always chalked that up to one of the probability spasms as the disparate Earths coalesced into the single DC universe and causality got cut off as a result. General Zod, Faora and Quex-Ul (sadly) turned up in a restored Phantom Zone which appeared to be linked to the Pocket Universe and proceded to enact genocide against its Earth in vengeance for Superboy's actions against them. There was no sign of Aethyr there, although Mxyzptlk re-emerged soon after.

Of course, we're dealing with Pre-Crisis comics here, so it does survive into our continuity. I for one don't really care what has been done with most characters since then. So many characters share only the same name as their Pre-Crisis counterparts but little else.

While it was painful to see what happened to the Pocket Universe Earth after Superboy's death in post-Crisis continuity, I loathed the new iteration of Quex-Ul, which obliterated the memory of the original pre-Crisis figure who sacrificed himself to save Superman and who was essentially a good person. And frankly, for me, there are still questions about the totality of Aethyr's extent of control over the Phantom Zone. Were his abilities effectively limited to the inner precincts of the Phantom Zone, or did they have wider consequences?
