At the moment, I'm writing a Justice Alliance episode in the Infinite Earths thread set immediately after one of the characters has been killed in action. The immediate consequences are that the character that the deceased JAA member loved has taken a leave of absence to mourn his loss and that the other Alliance members are reflecting on loss and hope in their own lives. I'm undecided about whether or not to introduce a supervillain character to disrupt the moment, or whether to leave it a quiet time piece in which the Alliance members have time to reflect on the magnitude of their loss, look for hope (Earth-500's Superwoman is pregnant) and seek solace in their existing romantic relationships or friendships. I like strong continuity and characterisation in my stories. I know it's a sombre piece, but I hope that I can write in enough hope and healing as well. Because these folks are metahuman, emphasis on the human angle.

Might the heroes in the Alliance view a super villain differently in such circumstances? Some of them might think 'people like you are the reason our friend died' and act to punish this villain for that death. Others might wonder if some sort of tragedy in the past is what drives this villain and perhaps be more sympathetic. Perhaps some of them are having secret thoughts about the lack of rewards for being heroic and considering totally changing their careers, perhaps to bounty hunters or even villany. Some others might think that battling supervillains is no longer worth the risk to them, and perhaps retire. If this is a villain with whom they have contended with for a long time, perhaps the villain might offer sympathy and condolences? Or perhaps the villain is trying to take advantage of the moment, knowing that the Justice Alliance might not be at the top of their game right now? I could even envision some audacious scammer or phisher, trying to take advantage of their grief in some way or other.
