Does anyone know of any Golden Age stage magicians who were also detectives? Characters who don't have any actual powers? I'd like to read some stories of this type of character in order to get some ideas for a character backstory I want to write. Thanks!

Wwll, Timely had real life magician Blackstone. The only other one I know of offhand is the pulp character Phantom Magician. His adventures started shortly after the Shadow and ran into the late 1940s, I believe. He mostly used trickery and disguises although I'm not sure if he also had a stage show.

Well, the original doesn't have to have a stage show; I can add that. I'll look into the Phantom Magician. thanks!

There's Balbo at Fawcett and Mysto over at DC (Granted he's a borderline Silver Age, late Golden Age character).

Thanks, Dave! Actually I am ripping off Balbo; I used him as an adult in one of my stories Earth S stories and I want to rewrite that story so it is independent of any DC characters. So I am going to rename the character and want to give him some independent backstory. I'll look at the Balbo stories and see it there are any good plots I can reuse and rewrite so the character is clearly not Balbo.
