Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane
Times Past, 1972 The Proposal of Power-Man An Untold Tale of Superman Part 1: The King of Outer SpaceSeptember, 1972:Lois Lane, a determined and passionate young journalist, sat at her desk at the Daily Planet, staring blankly at the notes next to her typewriter, her face a conflicted mix of frustration and longing. As it often did ever since their adventure together on Bamboo Island weeks ago, her mind had wandered off, consumed by thoughts of Superman. It was there that Superman briefly lost his powers and the two were forced to use only their human ingenuity to survive on that hostile island. Thanks to that experience, Lois had overcome her earlier impression of Superman being a conceited show-off. In fact, it was there that she had first fallen for him in a way that she'd never fallen for any man before. (*)[(*) Editor's note: See "How Lois Lane Fell in Love With Superman," Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane #53 (November, 1964).]Perry White, the outwardly gruff editor-in-chief, passed by Lois's desk, clearly noticing how distracted she was. "Lois, is that article on the City Council's new legislation ready yet? I need it on my desk by three o'clock sharp."Lois jolted back to reality, her attention snapped back to her job. "Oh, right!" she said, looking apologetic. "Sorry, Perry. I'll have it done before the deadline. No worries." With a harrumph, Perry stalked back to his office.Clark Kent, the mild-mannered reporter who was secretly Superman, sauntered over to Lois' desk with a playful smirk on his face. "Seems like someone's got a lot on their mind today," he remarked.Lois looked up from the blank sheet on her typewriter, her eyes ablaze with annoyance. Through gritted teeth, she replied, "And what exactly is that supposed to mean, Clark?"Clark chuckled, unable to help himself. "Oh, come on, Lois. I might technically be the new guy, still in my three-month probation until the end of the month, but I know you better than you think. It's written all over your face. You're daydreaming about Superman, aren't you?"Her frustration boiling over, Lois glared daggers at Clark. "You know what, Kent?" she replied hotly. "Maybe you could learn a thing or two from Superman about how to talk to a woman. I'm surprised nobody taught you that back in Smallville."Clark's grin widened, but he quickly hid it behind a reassuring smile. If only you knew, Lois, he mused. If only you knew.As Lois returned to her work, a mischievous glint began to form in her eyes. She started trying to brainstorm a few ideas, determined to make Superman finally notice her as more than just his female reporter friend. Maybe it's time for the tables to turn, she thought. While you're busy saving the world, Superman, I'll have to find a creative way to really get your attention.Little did Lois know that her attempts to make Superman jealous would lead her into an unexpected romance that could threaten her burgeoning relationship with Superman altogether.***Lois Lane strolled through Centennial Park in Metropolis, her thoughts consumed by a single goal of making Superman realize her worth. She knew she deserved more than just being a mere colleague and confidante. With a sigh, she thought, I deserve more than the 'puppy-dog love' he's shown me thus far. I need Superman to see me for who I am -- a real woman who could be the best thing in his life! But how can I convince him of that? Perhaps, if I fell out a window...?As her mind raced with schemes and ideas, little did she know that she was being observed from afar.***In outer space, aboard his lavishly adorned royal spaceship that was even now quickly approaching Earth, Power-Man watched Lois via his fourth-dimensional camera, which enabled him to tune in on almost any part of the universe with full sight and sound. Not long ago, the King of Outer Space had discovered her existence and had quickly become captivated by her. He also couldn't help but notice how little attention Superman had been paying her."Lois Lane, a woman of beauty and determination," he mused aloud. "Superman's lack of commitment is my opportunity."The charismatic and powerful Power-Man, seeing Lois as fair game, had made a decision to pursue her. Although he had fallen for her without even meeting her in person, the King of Outer Space was a decisive man and had already made his fateful voyage to Earth to make his intentions known. In mere moments, thanks to the speed of his craft, they would meet.***With a majestic entrance, Power-Man's spaceship came to a graceful landing in the middle of Centennial Park, the citizens of Metropolis marveling at its grandeur. Lois turned her gaze to the spectacle, her curiosity and journalist's instinct piqued. Now this is a scoop! she thought, already making mental notes. As the spaceship's doors opened, revealing Power-Man standing tall in his orange suit with dark purple boots and a sash, Lois couldn't help but be drawn to him. After all, he exuded a presence similar to that of Superman.Approaching Lois with an air of confidence, the crowds parting way for him, Power-Man greeted her with a warm smile. "Lois Lane -- the woman I've been watching from my kingdom a galaxy away! I've fallen for your beauty and determination. Will you do me the honor of becoming my queen?"Lois was taken aback by Power-Man's directness, and had to stifle a laugh, but despite her shock she still managed to keep her composure. She had never encountered an extraterrestrial suitor, let alone one who offered her the title of Queen before. Intrigued by the possibilities that lay beyond Earth, she decided to play along, hoping to arouse Superman's jealousy."Power-Man, your offer is certainly... unexpected," she said, smiling warmly. "I'm flattered, but I will need time to consider such a profound decision," she continued in a convincing tone. The face of the King of Outer Space lit up with hope. "Imagine the wonders of the Outer Universe. Together, we could rule galaxies and embody love and strength." Making a grand gesture toward the sky and the distant stars beyond, he implored her confidently, "Please, Lois! I'll make you Queen of the Outer Universe!"The crowd of people watched tensely as all present waited for Lois to make her decision and give her answer.Lois Lane had to admit that the proposition held an allure. Becoming Queen of the Outer Universe would undoubtedly be a reporter's dream, and a grand adventure -- the adventure that could finally make Superman realize my true worth! Lois mused, thinking that this could play into her plans better than she had ever expected. She knew she would be playing a delicate game, but if it ended up leading to the outcome she desired, it would all be worth it."Power-Man, your offer is enticing," Lois replied coyly, her eyes glistening with a mix of curiosity and mischief. "I can't give you an answer to your proposal just yet, but I will agree to one thing: I will spend time getting to know you, and you can show me the wonders beyond Earth's boundaries."As Power-Man extended his hand, a spark of excitement ignited within Lois. She had entered a world full of possibilities, hoping that her involvement with the enigmatic alien would finally make Superman realize what he was missing. Deep down, however, Lois knew that beneath the facade, her heart still longed for the love of the Man of Steel. The cosmic dance had begun, and the stakes were high. Power-Man had unwittingly become a pawn in Lois Lane's quest for love and recognition.***Lois Lane stood in awe, gripping her notepad as she gazed at the opulent decor inside Power-Man's royal spaceship. To her astonishment, the interior of the spaceship seemed to be far larger than the exterior. The King of Outer Space had tried to explain to her the concept of tesseracts, or four-dimensional hypercubes, but had settled on the mere fact that it was larger on the inside than it looked from the outside. The lavish interior gleamed with intergalactic treasures and golden artifacts, speaking to the vastness of his space empire, known as the Outer Universe. Advanced robots, the only other beings on the ship at all, could be seen emerging from walls and returning to them once their job was done. Power-Man, towering and regal, exuded an otherworldly charm as he approached Lois."I-I can't believe this," Lois cried. "You rule over a whole empire?"Power-Man chuckled and replied, "Indeed, Lois. This ship is just a fraction of what awaits you as my queen."As they walked through the pristine corridors, Lois couldn't help but find herself captivated by Power-Man's presence. His stories of intergalactic battles, space diplomacy, and the wonders of his vast domain stirred both her imagination and her reporter's curiosity. Yet, in the recesses of her mind, the plan to ignite Superman's emotions remained.***Lois, accompanied by Power-Man, strolled through Centennial Park. The early autumn leaves rustled under their feet as they engaged in lighthearted conversation. Then an idea gnawed at Lois, and she decided to test her suitor."You know, Power-Man," she said teasingly, "it's quite a leap for me to consider your proposal. I'm not one to easily give up my independence.""I understand, Lois," Power-Man replied earnestly, "but my empire is intertwined with the grand tapestry of the universe. Together, we can accomplish endless possibilities."Lois, intrigued by the prospect and playing the part, allowed herself to briefly envision a different future than the one she'd pictured so often as of late. She now saw herself as the Queen of the Outer Universe, ruling alongside Power-Man. It was a tempting thought, indeed.***Lois Lane sat in her office at the Daily Planet, her eyes fixated on her well-worn notebook. She had been utterly fascinated with the information about the Outer Universe that Power-Man had shared with her, but deep down, she still pined for Superman. Come on, Superman, she thought to herself. Notice me!As if on cue, the window suddenly swung open, and Superman stepped inside. "Lois... can we talk?" he said softly, his face filled with concern.Lois looked up, trying to act nonchalant. "Of course, Superman. What's on your mind?"They moved to the rooftop of the Daily Planet. Superman hovered in midair next to the huge golden globe circled by a ring, his gaze fixed on Lois."Lois, I've been keeping an eye on this Power-Man character since he arrived in Metropolis," Superman began cautiously. "There's something... off about him. I don't think he's entirely what he seems."Feeling defensive, Lois replied, "Superman, he's a strange visitor from another world just like you are! Who are you to judge?"Superman landed on the rooftop, his cape gently flapping in the wind. He approached Lois, his eyes filled with sincerity as he pleaded for her understanding. "Lois, I'm not judging him," he said earnestly. "I'm just concerned about you. There's so much we still don't know about his intentions."Lois looked deep into his eyes, her determination unwavering. "Superman, I appreciate your concern," she said earnestly. "But I can take care of myself. Power-Man -- he's already shown me a different side of the universe. I can't ignore the possibilities."Superman's face fell, his heart sinking at Lois' words. Yet, he couldn't help but admire her strength and independent spirit. He took a deep breath, cementing his decision in his mind."Lois, if Power-Man truly makes you happy, I won't stand in your way," he said resolutely. "But promise me you'll be careful. I speak from experience when I say the Outer Universe can be a dangerous place."Lois's voice softened as she replied, "Thank you, Superman. Your opinion means a lot to me."***Later, Lois joined Power-Man in his spaceship at Centennial Park. Standing beside him in the ship's grand throne room, she couldn't help but feel a thrill of excitement. "So, Power-Man, are you all talk, or can you actually show me some real intergalactic wonders?" she teased.Power-Man chuckled, unable to resist the challenge. He stepped forward and extended his hand toward Lois. "Prepare to be amazed, My Queen," he said confidently. As they walked side by side, Superman's words echoed in Lois' mind. She couldn't shake the feeling that their lives were about to change forever. Still, she reasoned, perhaps embracing the unknown could be the key to her own happiness.***As the spaceship began its voyage toward the Outer Universe, Lois and Power-Man sat side by side, sharing stories and laughter. Oblivious to Lois' true intentions, Power-Man had no doubt that he had already won her heart. His eyes glistened with adoration as he gazed at her."Lois, my love, you've brought joy to my universe," Power-Man said affectionately. "I've never felt such a connection before.""Power-Man, I can't deny the allure of your vast empire," Lois replied with sincerity. "Together, we could accomplish so much. But there's something I must tell you..."Lois paused, her voice gentle, yet filled with resolve. Power-Man looked at her, his gaze pleading for her to continue."I made a promise to myself long ago," she explained. "I can't fully commit until I know where my heart truly lies."Power-Man's expression softened, his eyes searching hers for understanding. In a somewhat defeated tone, he said, "Lois, I understand. If your heart is still torn, I won't force this decision upon you. But please know that my feelings for you are genuine."***Standing by the observation window, Lois stared out at the vast expanse of stars as the ship passed them by. In her heart, she knew the truth that she still longed for Superman's love. But as the light from distant galaxies flickered before her, a glimmer of curiosity ignited within. The potential of the Outer Universe beckoned, a realm filled with unimaginable wonders."Superman..." she whispered, "what do you truly feel for me?"Taking a deep breath, Lois prepared herself for the impending decision that could alter not only her own destiny but the fate of two extraordinary men.TO BE CONTINUED IN PART 2 SHORTLY!

Part 2: Queen of the Outer Universe
Lois Lane stood in awe within the opulent expanse of Power-Man's royal palace, nestled amidst the vast expanse of the planet Kruna, home world of the star-spanning, intergalactic empire known as the Outer Universe. The royal palace was a magnificent sight to behold, a testament to the grandeur of Power-Man's outer space kingdom.
As she gazed around, her eyes were greeted by an extravagant panorama of unparalleled grandeur that she would be hard-pressed to describe in words. The architecture of the palace was a symphony of cosmic elegance, its towering spires reaching for the starry heavens above. Glistening crystal chandeliers hung like celestial constellations, casting a soft, ethereal glow across the vast marble halls.
The walls, adorned with intricate murals depicting the history of the Outer Universe, seemed to whisper tales of forgotten civilizations and cosmic conquests ages ago. Each step she took on the polished marble floors echoed with a harmonious resonance, as if the very foundation of this celestial abode reverberated with the secrets of the cosmos.
The air was scented with the sweet fragrance of exotic alien flowers that bloomed in extravagant gardens, their colors more vibrant than any earthly flora. Rare and exquisite creatures, adorned with iridescent plumage and jeweled scales, roamed freely beneath a starry sky that had three moons, adding an otherworldly charm to the palace's allure.
Before she left Earth, Lois had imagined that she could have anticipated what awaited her in the Outer Universe, but the sheer opulence and grandeur of this royal palace surpassed even her wildest dreams. It was a place where the boundaries of imagination merged with the boundless expanse of the cosmos, a testament to the majesty of the universe itself.
During the voyage here, she had continued her charade, leading Power-Man to believe that she was genuinely considering his proposal. She had played her role flawlessly, in fact, captivating him with her wit and charm, even as she had thought to herself, Keep it up, Lois. Just a little longer and Superman will be eating his heart out.
However, she had never expected to find herself as genuinely intrigued by the world of Kruna as she was. Within the opulent walls of the royal palace, Lois found herself surrounded by both fascinating technology and architectural marvels. As she walked through it, she thought, This place is incredible! I never knew there was so much to Power-Man's world.
Soon, Power-Man was showing her glimpses of his extraordinary powers, hoping to impress her and make her choose him over Superman. In a grand courtyard, Power-Man stood tall and proud, his distinctive orange suit shimmering in the Outer Universe's vibrant moonlight. Lois watched with awe as he effortlessly deflected a barrage of bullet-like projectiles, their metallic glints sparkling harmlessly in the air.
"Look, Lois! My invulnerability is unmatched!" proclaimed the King of Outer Space.
Power-Man then turned his attention to lifting a massive statue with ease, showcasing his incredible force.
Lois watched in awe, her eyes wide with a mix of admiration and determination. "Wow, Power-Man!" she cried. "Your strength is incredible!"
She couldn't help but be impressed by Power-Man's abilities. She had admired Superman for his invulnerability and super strength, but witnessing Power-Man in action had kindled a newfound fascination within her.
As Lois marveled at Power-Man's strength, invulnerability, and his graceful flight through the cosmic expanse, she couldn't help but feel a rush of excitement. It was as if she had stepped into the pages of a storybook, and her childhood dreams of fairytale princes had come to life, albeit with a decidedly science fiction bent.
But their awe-inspiring moment was interrupted when a colossal, monstrous beast descended from the starry skies above. The creature resembled a two-headed winged dragon, but its alien appearance sent shivers down Lois's spine. It was a fanged grangorn, a terrifying menace that lurked in the Outer Universe.
Lois' scream filled the air as the grangorn made a vicious dive, attempting to snatch her away. Before she could fully comprehend the danger, Power-Man was there, a blur of power and determination. With a mighty blow, he intercepted the grangorn's attack, sending it reeling.
"Lois, get behind the protectisphere while I deal with this deadly grangorn!" Power-Man shouted urgently, pointing to the shimmering energy barrier that all citizens of the Outer Universe used to shield themselves from such perilous threats.
With her heart pounding in her chest, Lois dashed behind the protectisphere's safety, her wide eyes never leaving the incredible battle that unfolded before her. The grangorn, now thwarted in its abduction attempt, directed its rage toward Power-Man. It unleashed a ferocious barrage of blue flame from the maws of both heads, a torrent of searing destruction.
Power-Man fought valiantly, his invulnerable form withstanding the onslaught. He soared through the fiery storm, using every ounce of his power to combat the monstrous foe. Each punch, every maneuver, a testament to his indomitable spirit.
As the battle reached its climactic crescendo, Power-Man summoned his might for a final, crushing blow. With a resounding impact, he struck both heads of the grangorn simultaneously, sending shockwaves rippling through the beast's body. The grangorn let out a deafening roar of agony before collapsing, unconscious.
Immediately, concealed chambers beneath the palace revealed themselves, and large robots emerged. They efficiently dragged the defeated grangorn away, vanishing as swiftly as they had appeared.
With the threat neutralized, Power-Man turned to Lois and offered a reassuring smile. "You can come out now, Lois. It's safe."
Hesitantly, Lois emerged from behind the protectisphere, her gaze still fixed on the heavens, searching for any lingering dangers. She finally turned to Power-Man, her eyes filled with a mix of awe and trepidation.
"Is the Outer Universe always this dangerous?" Lois asked, her thoughts inevitably drifting to the warning Superman had given her earlier.
Power-Man hesitated for a moment, then nodded solemnly. "Yes, Lois," he admitted, his voice filled with a hint of regret. "The Outer Universe is a perilous place. But you have nothing to fear, for if you choose to be with me, and become Queen of the Outer Universe at last, I will always be by your side, protecting you from all possible threats."
The King of Outer Space stepped toward her. "Lois, my love," he continued with a warm grin, "do you see? With me, you will always be safe. No harm will ever come to you."
As the stars above twinkled with a sense of cosmic wonder, Lois couldn't help but feel a glimmer of hope in the face of the universe's dangers. With Power-Man by her side, perhaps she had found her own hero, ready to shield her from the unknown perils that lay beyond the stars.
***
What is Lois getting herself into? thought Superman, watching her from afar with his telescopic vision. He had almost revealed himself when that winged monster tried to attack Lois, but had held himself back when Power-Man stepped in and neutralized the threat. I need to find out more about this Power-Man.
Unbeknownst to Lois, Superman had followed the spaceship there and had been surreptitiously observing her interactions with Power-Man. A mix of jealousy and concern for Lois' safety had welled up within him. He knew he had to investigate Power-Man's background, to uncover the truth about this enigmatic suitor.
Using his super-speed, Superman delved into the records of the Outer Universe, tirelessly seeking every piece of information about Power-Man's lineage and the empire he claimed. The more he learned, the more a pang of realization stabbed at Superman's heart.
Power-Man wasn't just an ordinary hero or a charlatan from another planet as he had suspected. He truly was the heir to a star-spanning empire -- the Outer Universe. His claim as a royal figure held true. If Power-Man is who he claims to be, then Lois might actually have found someone worthy of her, Superman mused sadly as he came to understand that the love that Power-Man offered Lois was likely genuine, not a trick or an imaginary story.
As the truth settled in, Superman's heart ached. He couldn't deny that Lois may have found an extraordinary man in Power-Man, someone who could offer her a life fitting her strength and passion.
With a sadness the Man of Steel had only felt a few times before, Superman made a silent resolution. If Lois truly loves Power-Man, I won't stand in their way, he determined. She deserves to be happy, even if it's not with me.
As he flew off into the distance, returning to Earth, he thought, I just hope she realizes how much I care about her.
***
At the royal palace, Lois Lane found herself growing more intrigued by Power-Man, King of Outer Space, with each passing moment. It had begun as a charade, in which she played her role flawlessly, leading him to believe that she was genuinely interested in his proposal, all while secretly hoping that her interest would make Superman jealous. However, something unexpected had begun to happen as Lois observed the depth of Power-Man's feelings for her.
The next evening, after a day of touring some of the greatest wonders of the Outer Universe, Lois and Power-Man found themselves engaged in an animated conversation in the lavish halls of Power-Man's royal palace. The room was adorned with intricate tapestries and futuristic technology, but their focus remained solely on each other.
"You know, Lois, when I first met you, I was concerned that once you learned about my great wealth and my unsurpassable powers, those might have influenced any interest you might have in me more than who I am behind all that," Power-Man confessed, his voice full of genuine emotion. "There are many such female admirers here in my realm, beauties all, who would leap at the chance to wed me for those reasons. None of them know me as I truly am, and their interest in me is cheapened by that fact. But spending time with you has unveiled a side of me I never knew existed. Your presence has awakened the noble qualities within me."
Lois couldn't help but be surprised by Power-Man's revelation. Knowing his role as the King of Outer Space, she had expected him to prove himself both arrogant and self-absorbed, much as she had once thought of Superman before she got to know him, but there was an undeniable sincerity in his eyes. It made her reassess her initial judgments.
Graciously, Lois smiled and replied, "Power-Man, I won't deny that I was skeptical about your intentions when we first met. But as I've gotten to know you, I've realized that there is more to you than meets the eye. Your kindness and passion for justice are admirable."
Power-Man's face lit up with a hopeful expression. "You truly believe that, Lois? That there might be a chance for us?"
Lois paused for a moment, exploring her own conflicted feelings. Power-Man had surprised her with his vulnerability and genuine affection. While her initial plan had been to use him to make Superman jealous, she couldn't dismiss the possibility of a potential connection between them.
"Power-Man, what we have is undeniably complicated," Lois said, her voice laced with honesty. "I can't deny the chemistry between us, nor the growth of my admiration for you. But there's someone else in my life who holds a special place in my heart."
Power-Man's expression wavered between hope and disappointment, but he nodded, accepting her words. "I understand, Lois. I can't ask you to choose between me and... that someone else. If your heart truly belongs to another, I cannot stand in your way."
An unexpected pang of guilt struck Lois. She realized that she had been using Power-Man as a means to an end, without fully acknowledging his genuine emotions. Her charade had unwittingly led to a connection she had not anticipated.
"I'm sorry, Power-Man," Lois whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "I never intended for things to become this complicated. You deserve someone who can give you their whole heart, and I'm not sure that is something I can offer you, at least for now."
Power-Man reached out, gently clasping Lois' hand in his. "Lois, you have helped me see the depth of my own emotions and the potential for growth within myself. For that, I am grateful. It takes a remarkable person to make someone question their beliefs, and you've done just that. Although it pains me, I respect your honesty and your commitment to your heart."
"I promise you to give my answer to your proposal soon," said Lois. "But before I can do that, I must return to my world. There's someone I need to speak with first."
"So be it," replied Power-Man. "We will leave on the morrow. Please, have yourself a restful sleep tonight in your chambers. Though we will traverse the stars faster than the speed of light, we still have a long return voyage ahead of us."
Lois nodded, grateful for Power-Man's understanding. Their encounter had not turned out as she had expected, but it had opened her eyes to the complexity of emotions and the capacity for change within herself.
As the moments passed, Lois and Power-Man stood in silent acknowledgment of the unexpected connection they had forged. It was a connection that had been initially built on deception, but it had been transformed through their mutual understanding and respect. Uncertain of where their paths would lead them, they knew that the impact of their encounter would forever shape their lives.
It had seemed so simple at first, thought Lois. I had been planning to simply use Power-Man's interest in me to kindle the fires of jealousy in Superman. But as it turns out, Power-Man is equally as worthy, and he truly cares about me. And I... I may be falling for him myself. How can I choose between two of the most powerful heroes in the universe when I love them both?
TO BE CONCLUDED... VERY SOON!

I am very curious to find out if something is truly off about Power Man, or if Superman is thinking more with his heart.

Part 3: Clash of the Super-Suitors (Conclusion)
The bustling newsroom of the Daily Planet was filled with reporters typing away at their desks and phones ringing off the hook. Lois Lane, dressed in her signature business attire, walked into the break room, a tired look on her face. She poured herself a cup of coffee, trying to shake off the exhaustion from a long day of reporting. Power-Man had brought her back to Earth as planned, and Lois had been putting off her talk with Superman for the past couple of days since her return. Still, she knew she needed to discuss a few things with the Man of Steel before she could give her answer to Power-Man when they met tonight for their planned date.
Suddenly, Superman appeared beside her, his presence catching her off guard. "Lois, can we talk for a moment?" he said in a hushed voice.
"Superman!" she replied, startled. "You nearly gave me a heart attack. What's up?"
"Let's find somewhere a bit more private to talk," Superman said.
"A-all right," said Lois, placing her half-empty cup onto the counter. I've been dreading this moment, but it must be done, she thought to herself.
Superman swiftly scooped Lois up in his arms and burst through the open window at the end of the hallway, soaring high above the city of Metropolis. They soon found themselves amidst soft, white clouds, isolated from the chaos below. There, the two could discuss things in peace in a simulated anti-gravity environment that Superman had created using his powers.
"Lois, I need to talk to you about Power-Man," began Superman.
"What about him?" she asked, suspicion creeping into her voice.
Superman said, "Lois, I know there's more to your relationship with him than meets the eye."
Lois looked conflicted, her eyes avoiding Superman's piercing gaze. "What are you implying, Superman?" she said, a bit defensively.
"Lois, please," he said gently. "I can see through your act. I know you don't love Power-Man."
Her expression softened as she finally met Superman's unwavering gaze. With a sigh, she said, "You're right, Superman. I don't love Power-Man -- at least not yet. But I need you to understand why I've been considering his marriage proposal."
Superman placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, concern etched on his face. "Lois, I'm worried about your safety. Power-Man's life is dangerous, and being close to him puts you in harm's way."
Lois looked down, tears welling up in her eyes as she struggled with her emotions. "Superman, I know the risks," she replied tearfully. "But I can't let that stop me from finding happiness. If I can't be with you, then what is there to stop me from being with Power-Man? I've been considering that -- that I might accept Power-Man's proposal of marriage."
Superman took her hand, a mixture of sadness and determination in his eyes. "Lois, you have no idea how much I care about you," he said softly. "You're the only woman I'd ever even consider marrying, but you know I can't because of the risks. Please, consider your own safety."
Wiping away a tear, Lois nodded, momentarily accepting Superman's explanation. "I understand, Superman," she replied. "But Power-Man has assured me that I'll always be safe if we're together. Can you say the same?"
Superman and Lois exchanged a bittersweet look, their unspoken feelings hanging heavy in the air. The feeling of being torn between his love for Lois and his responsibilities as the world's protector was almost palpable.
After a long pause, Lois said, "That's what I thought. As long as you're Superman, I'll always play second fiddle to saving the world."
Superman nodded in resignation. "Whatever your final decision is, please be careful, Lois."
"I will," she whispered.
As the clouds parted and the city of Metropolis came into view, Superman gently picked up Lois and descended back to earth.
Moments later, back at her desk at the Daily Planet, Lois Lane couldn't help but feel conflicted. Power-Man had shown her a world beyond her wildest dreams. She had begun to appreciate his strength and presence, but deep down, she knew that her heart still held a place for the Man of Steel. As the dance between Power-Man, Lois, and Superman continued, their lives would be inexorably changed, for better or for worse.
***
From his spaceship, Power-Man had been watching the two the whole time. He had only viewed Superman's rendezvous with Lois Lane in the clouds without hearing any of their discussion, having respected her privacy as she had requested. Still, the King of Outer Space had seen enough. "This ends here," he vowed, his anger reaching its boiling point. He clenched his fists, his eyes blazing with fury as he confronted Superman in midair as the Man of Steel half-heartedly resumed his daily patrol of Metropolis.
"You think you can just swoop in and steal my bride-to-be, Superman?" cried Power-Man, having soared through the air to halt the Man of Steel's flight path. "Well, I won't stand for it!"
Superman, taken aback by Power-Man's sudden hostility, raised his hands in a gesture of peace. "Power-Man, calm down! I'm not trying to steal Lois from you. I was only trying to talk to her about my concern for her safety."
The King of Outer Space lunged at Superman, throwing a powerful punch that connected with his foe's jaw. The Man of Steel staggered back, but quickly regained his footing.
"Power-Man, this isn't the way to handle this!" shouted Superman. "We need to talk it out like rational adults."
But Power-Man wasn't listening. He continued to attack Superman with reckless abandon, his fists and feet a blur of motion. Superman, realizing that Power-Man's anger was clouding his judgment, defended himself just enough to avoid serious harm.
"Power-Man, STOP!" Superman yelled, his amplified voice echoing amongst the downtown skyscrapers. "This isn't the answer. We need to find a way to resolve this peacefully."
Soon, Power-Man's assault began to slow as his rage turned into sadness. He paused for a moment, his shoulders slumping.
"Why, Superman?" asked Power-Man. "Why didn't you act on your feelings for Lois? I saw them, I felt them through my fourth-dimensional camera. If you loved her, why didn't you propose?"
Superman found himself unable to reply, not knowing what might happen if he was honest with himself and with Power-Man.
"For years I have focused my fourth-dimensional camera upon many worlds such as yours, Superman," Power-Man explained, "in my quest to learn more about other heroic champions such as you and I, as well as the worlds they protect. Many of those super-heroes across the universe had love interests of their own, just as you had Lois Lane. Yet, unlike most of them, you had chosen not to act upon your very obvious feelings for Lois, choosing instead to hold her at a distance. If you weren't yet ready to engage in marriage, then why hadn't you at the very least pledged your undying love to her, to be consummated at a more ideal time in the future? She would have given her heart to you forever, had that been the case! And I would never have extended my own proposal of marriage."
Superman, his voice filled with regret, looked at Power-Man with a mix of understanding and sorrow. "Power-Man, I do have feelings for Lois. But part of being Superman means that I will always have responsibilities that extend far beyond my own personal happiness. I can't risk her safety by being with her."
Power-Man listened intently to Superman's words, his anger dissipating. He nodded his head as he began to realize the weight of Superman's sacrifice and the love he had for Lois. "I... I didn't understand. I had chosen Lois as my bride-to-be as I had reasoned that only the most worthy of women could have caught the eye of the famed Superman. As I began to watch her, I couldn't help but to see a note of sadness in her demeanor, and I could only guess that she was pining away for you, but with no apparent hope for a resolution that would satisfy her heart's desires. I thought that by proposing to Lois myself, I could give her the happiness deserving of such a woman chosen in love by one of the universe's great heroes. But if you're willing to let her go out of that love and concern for her well-being, then perhaps I should, too. The Outer Universe is a dangerous region on the frontier of civilized space, after all, and I worry that she is not equipped to handle its many perils."
Superman nodded, a sense of relief beginning to wash over him. "Power-Man, the choice is ultimately up to Lois. She needs to decide who she wants to be with. But please, let's not fight anymore. We're both heroes, and we should find a way to work together."
Power-Man extended a hand toward Superman, a newfound respect shining in his eyes. "You're right, Superman. Let's put our differences aside, for we both care about Lois too much to let this rivalry cause any further damage."
Superman shook Power-Man's hand, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Thank you, Power-Man. I appreciate your understanding."
"If we ever meet again, valiant champion," returned Power-Man with a warm smile of his own, "I hope to call you... friend."
Together, the two heroes flew back toward the city, united in their shared desire to protect the woman they both cared for deeply, their differences set aside. Their hearts heavy but determined, they knew that no matter what Lois finally decided, their innate heroism and nobility would guide them toward the right path.

That evening, as the opulent spaceship hovered over the breathtaking view of Metropolis, Power-Man approached Lois Lane, who was standing near the viewing window. As planned, the two had their date -- a candlelight dinner in which they discussed many things that had happened over the whirlwind of the past few days since their first meeting. Yet the subject of Power-Man's proposal and Lois' answer had been carefully avoided by both. Now, it was obvious that they both had a lot on their mind.
Sensing her inner turmoil, Power-Man said, "Lois, my dear, there is something we must discuss."
Lois turned to face Power-Man, her expression conflicted as tears welled up in her eyes. Unbeknownst to her, Superman hovered in the skies nearby, silently observing the scene with his super-senses, even though he dreaded what he might overhear. "What is it, Power-Man?" she said, trembling.
Taking Lois' hands in his own, Power-Man spoke gently, his demeanor regal and compassionate. "Lois, I sense the depths of your heart. I know you do not love me as you should, but rather another. And that other... is him."
Lois was taken aback, her eyes wide with shock. In the skies, Superman clenched his fists, his heart pounding as he awaited what might be said next.
"How... how do you know?" she asked.
With a sad smile, Power-Man's eyes filled with understanding and wisdom as he replied, "My dear Lois, I rule a star-spanning empire, and in my realm, I have seen many facets of love. True love is a force that transcends all barriers, even those as mighty as a king. I do not wish to stand in the way of true love."
Lois' tears began to flow as she realized the nobility of Power-Man's character. She couldn't deny her love for Superman, even though it meant hurting Power-Man. "Power-Man, you've shown me wonders beyond imagination -- the Seven Planets of Mist, the sparkling diamond asteroid belt of Artrupa, and many other marvels," said Lois. "But my heart..."
Power-Man pulled Lois into a tender embrace, whispering, "Lois, my greatest desire is for you to be happy. If your heart truly belongs to him, I cannot stand in your way."
Lois sobbed, feeling torn by her decision. "I don't want to hurt you, Power-Man, but I can't give up my love for him."
Superman watched from a distance, filled with both gratitude and sadness. He knew that Power-Man's understanding and sacrifice were truly noble, and he felt ashamed for having earlier thought poorly of him.
Power-Man stroked Lois' hair, comforting her in her moment of heartache. "Lois, my empire may span the stars, but I can never claim your heart if you do not wish to give it to me freely and wholeheartedly. Follow your heart, my dear, and know that I wish you all the happiness in the universe."
Lois wiped away her tears, her resolve strengthened. "Thank you, Power-Man, for your understanding. I'll always cherish the wonders you've shown me."
With a warm smile, Power-Man said, "Farewell, Lois Lane. May love and destiny guide your path."
They exchanged a kiss, followed by one last look filled with mutual respect and understanding before Power-Man slowly descended his ship to the top of her apartment building, where Lois exited down the ship's ramp. As Lois stood alone on the rooftop, shivering slightly, she waved a hand goodbye as she watched Power-Man's spaceship streak off into the starry night sky.

The next day, the Daily Planet newsroom was bathed in soft morning light as Lois Lane sat at her desk, her expression pensive as she worked at her electric typewriter. Her thoughts were consumed by her recent encounter with Power-Man, which she was struggling to put into words as a feature article. Power-Man, you truly are a noble soul, she mused. I'll never forget how you showed me the universe and gave up on your own hopes by wishing only for my happiness.
Lois' thoughts returned to her earlier preoccupation. But I can't give up on my own love for Superman, she thought determinedly. There has to be a way to convince him we're meant to be together, despite the risk.
As she continued to work on her news story, Clark Kent approached her desk, concern in his eyes. "Lois, is everything okay?" asked Clark, looking worried. "You've seemed so distracted lately."
Lois looked up, forcing a smile as she pushed aside her thoughts of both Superman and Power-Man. With a smile, she said, "Oh, it's nothing, Clark. Just lost in thought. But... I could use a coffee, and maybe a bite to eat. Want to join me at Harry's?"
Clark's face immediately lit up, and he nodded eagerly. "Sure, Lois," he said enthusiastically. "I'd love to."
As the two walked out of the newsroom together, she mused, Well, if I can't have Superman, at least I'll always have a friend in good, old, reliable Clark Kent.
As Lois and Clark headed to Harry's Dog House across the street from the Planet, the preferred diner for newspaper reporters in Metropolis, their friendship began to grow stronger, even as Lois' unyielding determination remained hidden beneath her charming smile.

And that's the end! I initially wrote this story in one evening, feeling terribly inspired to write a Silver Age Superman story in the vein of the Mort Weisinger era, and I've been adding more and more to it until it was ready for the world. As I said in the Power-Man, the King of Outer Space thread, there's still a lot left unexplored about Power-Man and his star-spanning empire, the Outer Universe, beyond what little tidbits I came up with for this story. I should note that this Power-Man bears no relation to any character published by Marvel Comics, nor is this Power-Man a grown-up Power-Boy from Superboy #52 (October, 1956). As far as I know, this Power-Man only ever appeared in that one throwaway panel in "The Man Who Married Lois Lane," Superman #136 (April, 1960). I figured that the story of Lois Lane's very first alien suitor just HAD to be told, so here it is. Let me know what you think. I've added a few "easter eggs" that reference some obscure trivia about Superman's early years, as well as some common tropes. If you spot them, I hope they add some enjoyment to this story.

Thanks, Doc - and you are right, it is very "Weisinger era-ish"!

Thanks, Doc - and you are right, it is very "Weisinger era-ish"! Yes, including some creepy stalker-type behavior on the part of both Power-Man and Superman, as it turns out! Still, it's part and parcel of the way Weisinger-era characters acted. I worried that Power-Man might come off as too "perfect," but I think I showed just enough that justified Lois NOT choosing him over Superman. From the extreme dangers of the Outer Universe to his idea to steal away Superman's girlfriend BECAUSE she is Superman's woman but never "put a ring on it," I somehow don't think Lois would have preferred that life with Power-Man over the one she chose, even if she ultimately didn't end up marrying Superman. I still hope she gets a happy ending that fits with what she once was and more importantly also now is.

I made a picture of Power Man using Adobe's new built-in AI. It took a lot of tweaking, but I managed to make something that looks not too bad. Kind of looks like something out of the original Star Trek series.
