Tomahawk Vol 1 #112 September 1967 was written by Bill Finger and may well have been the best story from the Tomahawk Ranger's era as Tomahawk is captured by a Hessian officer name Von Grote, who torture him mercilessly and break the Revolutionary War Hero. The Rangers rescue Tomahawk, but the Hero is obsessed with killing his torturer until the finally meet again and Tomahawk thirst for revenge is quenched as he takes the sadistic Hessian prisoner.
The only other time I ever read about hero breaking was one of the Secret Six in their origin and the Swordsman over at Marvel. But neither of them had their own book, or were a long-established hero like Tomahawk, who was first created in June of 1947 and continuously published for the next twenty years.

It certainly is interesting and realistic in tone. I wonder if that storyline was provoked by the US ambivalence over its participation within the Vietnam War during the same period?
