When continuing an orphaned story, are we allowed to do a rewrite using the original as the plot, or should we just pick up and continue it from where it left off?

I'd say that in most cases it's up to you. Feel free to rewrite it as needed.

I will follow the original as close as possible. Thanks.

As far as my own stories go, just ask me first. Within reason, if I like the rewrite idea, I will probably say go ahead

I had thought about doing that, but the writer apparently isn't a member of the group any longer--unless it's under a new name. Plus, the story hasn't been added to since 2017. That's why I sought advice first, just to be certain.

Good idea to ask, rather than just assuming, Lee. But any stories of mine that are in that section are fair game for anyone. I agree with the idea of following the original story as closely as possible. But reusing the plot and acknowledging the original author sounds fair to me. A lot of those authors don't show up here any longer.
